Safe Landscaping Guide

June 06, 2020

The season of landscaping is finally here! The sun is out, and you want your home to look aesthetically pleasing to any visitors who drive by or approach your home. It’s time to do some landscaping!

Is there a “right” way to tackle this outdoor project? Yes, it is! In fact, there’s also safety precautions you must take to ensure you avoid injury and mishaps. Below we’ve compiled safety tips for landscaping this season.

Wear the Right Gear

The most important tip, in our opinion, is wearing the right protective gear! Even if things go south, the gear you’re wearing can determine whether you’re injured and the extent of the injury.

Common safety gear to wear while taking on landscaping projects consist of:

  • Gloves
  • Goggles
  • Masks
  • Hard toe shoes

These are just a few important clothing pieces we recommend when working outdoors.

Know the Machinery

Probably a common safety tip, but you’d be surprised at the number of individuals who simply “wing-it” when using new equipment. You may be a handy person and very able to operate simple machinery and tools, but not knowing what you’re using is a quick way to cause injury or worse. When buying new tools with similarities to previous tools used, be sure to read the instructions.

Slight differences in new tools can make a difference when trying to achieve the results you want while also being safe.

Don’t Overexert Yourself

Doing some heavy lifting while landscaping? Be sure you don’t chew off more than you can handle. It’s easy to place too much pressure on ourselves when we want to see the completion of a project. Doing this can lead to muscle spasms and tears. If you’re older in age, this is a no-no.

Always ask for help when needed and complete the tasks that you’re capable of completing.
